Reading Announces Trick-or-Treating Hours for Halloween
The City of Reading has announced trick-or-treating will take place on Halloween, October 31, from 5 to 8 pm. Mayor Eddie Moran is asking residents handing out treats to turn on porch lights during these hours.
Drivers are urged to be very cautious as children in costumes will be crossing streets. Safety tips include using reflective tape, flashlights, and face paint instead of masks. Kids should walk on sidewalks, not in streets. The city encourages a safe and fun Halloween night.
To help encourage a safe Halloween experience, the city is offering the following tips:
• Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers.
• Choose face paint and makeup instead of masks to reduce the risk of blocking a child’s vision.
• Make sure costumes are the correct size to prevent trips and falls.
• Have kids carry flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
• Please keep an eye on the road for vehicles.
• Walk on sidewalks and cross streets at intersections and crosswalks. Don’t walk in the streets.
Happy Halloween to everyone from Reading Local Scoop!
Police Increase DUI Patrols for Halloween in Berks County
Law enforcement across Berks County will conduct roving and sobriety checkpoints over Halloween weekend to catch impaired drivers. With celebrations ramping up around Tuesday's holiday, officials are urging people to plan safe transportation if consuming drugs or alcohol.
Police advise that any substance use can impair driving ability, even if obtained legally. Marijuana in particular can slow reaction time and cognitive function. Getting behind the wheel while impaired puts everyone on the road in danger.
Ride sharing or designating a sober driver are recommended. The consequences of a DUI arrest can be severe, potentially costing up to $10,000 in fines and jail time.
By announcing increased patrols and checkpoints in advance, police aim to deter impaired driving and keep Berks roads safer through the Halloween festivities. Their message is simple: If you feel different, you drive different.
Don't take risks by driving impaired.
Second Suspect Arrested in Kidnapping, Execution-Style
Murder of Reading Man
Vashon A. Winfield, 19, was arrested and jailed without bail for the March 2022 kidnapping and murder of 19-year-old Javien Perch in Reading, PA. Perch's body was found shot 10 times in a wooded area in April.
In August, police charged Winfield and two other suspects, Hector L. Torres and Ansari Jalal, with murder, robbery, and kidnapping. Torres was already jailed on other charges. Jalal remains at large.
Investigators used the victim's cellphone data, license plate readers, and a witness account to identify the suspects. The witness said the victim was forced into their car and later shot by the three suspects.
The motive is believed to be previous negative interactions between Perch and his killers. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the remaining suspect Ansari Jalal is urged to contact Reading police.
With Winfield now in custody, two of the three suspects have been arrested for the brutal slaying execution of the Reading teenager months ago. Police continue to pursue the third suspect.
Union Set for Intense Best-of-3 Playoff Series Against New England
Jim Curtin and the fourth-seeded Union are gearing up for the MLS Cup playoffs, starting with a best-of-3 series against No. 5 New England.
The first match is at home on Saturday evening, with a potential third game also at Subaru Park. This year's playoffs reintroduce a format not used since 2002, with the first round being a best-of-3 series. T
he Union, last year's Eastern Conference champions, are relying on their experience in knockout soccer to navigate this format. Despite some injury concerns, the team is mostly healthy and ready for the challenge. The Union have a strong home record, which they hope will give them an edge in the upcoming games.
Wilson Girls Volleyball Moves on
to District Semifinals After
Quarterfinal Victory
The Wilson High School girls volleyball team won their quarterfinal match against Cumberland Valley High School on Thursday night by a score of 3-0. The victory clinches a berth in the state tournament for the four-time defending district champion Bulldogs.
The match was made more memorable when senior setter Cameryn Niedrowski recorded her 3,000th career assist during the third set. Her teammates expressed pride in her accomplishment after the game.
Led by eight experienced seniors, including Niedrowski, middle hitter Airyanna Kline and right-side hitter Nia Kendall, the veteran Wilson team controlled the match from the start against the fifth-seeded Cumberland Valley.
Kline delivered an impressive performance with 22 kills and six blocks, sealing the victory with a match-clinching block. Niedrowski contributed 42 assists, 15 digs and one block.
Head coach Denny Werner was pleased with his team's effort during a demanding stretch of four matches in just six days.
The Bulldogs now move on to face top-seeded Dallastown in the district semifinals on Tuesday as they remain focused on continuing their successful season.
Wyomissing's Sophia Zeppos Named Berks Girls Soccer Player of the Year
Junior Sophia Zeppos of Wyomissing High School has been named the Berks Girls Soccer Player of the Year by the BCIAA. Zeppos leads the county champion Spartans in goals (23) and points (65) as well as assists (19).
Zeppos headlines an All-Berks team of 13 players selected by league coaches. Joining her from Wyomissing are seniors Annie McCaffrey and Audrey Hurleman and sophomore Dulce Lytle.
Other multiple All-Berks selections come from Fleetwood, Schuylkill Valley, and Daniel Boone. Twin Valley senior Ashley Lavrich and Gov. Mifflin junior Ellie Leffler are repeat picks.
Zeppos, McCaffrey, and Leffler also earned All-State honors this season. The Berks Girls Soccer Coach of the Year has yet to be announced.
