Royals Fall to Lions in Shootout
After Blowing Late Lead

The Reading Royals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but ended up losing 4-3 in a shootout to the Trois-Rivières Lions on Saturday night.

Reading got goals from Yvan Mongo, Joseph Nardi and Ryan Chyzowski to go up 3-2 in the game. But the Lions rallied to tie it at 3-3 with just over five minutes left in regulation.

The game remained tied through the end of the third period and overtime. In the shootout, both teams missed their first three attempts. Trois-Rivières' Miguël Tourigny finally converted his shot while Reading could not answer.

Mongo finished with a goal and an assist for the Royals in the losing effort. The two teams will face off again on Sunday afternoon at Santander Arena, with Reading looking to avenge the shootout loss.

Despite leading twice in the game, the Royals ultimately cost themselves with their inability to protect the late one-goal advantage. The Lions pounced on the opportunity to complete the comeback and steal the extra point in the shootout.

Police Increase DUI Patrols for Halloween in Berks County

Law enforcement across Berks County will conduct roving and sobriety checkpoints over Halloween weekend to catch impaired drivers. With celebrations ramping up around Tuesday's holiday, officials are urging people to plan safe transportation if consuming drugs or alcohol.

Police advise that any substance use can impair driving ability, even if obtained legally. Marijuana in particular can slow reaction time and cognitive function. Getting behind the wheel while impaired puts everyone on the road in danger.

Ride sharing or designating a sober driver are recommended. The consequences of a DUI arrest can be severe, potentially costing up to $10,000 in fines and jail time.

By announcing increased patrols and checkpoints in advance, police aim to deter impaired driving and keep Berks roads safer through the Halloween festivities. Their message is simple: If you feel different, you drive different.

Don't take risks by driving impaired.

Woman Charged with
Retail Theft from Kohl’s

On August 2nd, police responded to a retail theft report at the local Kohl's Department Store. The theft occurred on July 28th and resulted in a total loss of $3,248 in merchandise from the store.

After an investigation, police charged Elena Caldararu on October 26th with retail theft for allegedly stealing the merchandise. The value of the stolen goods exceeds the threshold for a felony charge of retail theft under Pennsylvania law.

No further details were provided by police regarding how the theft took place or what specific items were stolen from the store. Caldararu now faces felony retail theft charges for the incident at Kohl's that reportedly occurred the previous week. The local Spring Township Police Department continues to investigate the case.

Union Crush Revs 3-1 in Playoff Opener

The Philadelphia Union dominated the New England Revolution 3-1 in the first game of their MLS playoff series on Tuesday night.

The Union scored all three of their goals in a first half blitz. Daniel Gazdag, Mikkel Uhre and Nathan Harriel all found the back of the net for Philly before halftime.

The game took a bad turn for the Revs when star midfielder Carles Gil exited with an apparent leg injury after just 23 minutes. Without their MVP, the Revs struggled to generate offense.

In the second half, Gustavo Bou pulled one back for New England. But Union goalkeeper Andre Blake came up with a huge save late to prevent a comeback.

With the 3-1 victory, the Union now hold a 1-0 series lead heading into Game 2 in New England next week. They'll look to finish off the Revs on the road and advance to the next round.

Ducks Roll Past Flyers
Behind Vatrano's Hat Trick

The Anaheim Ducks cruised to a 7-4 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night, led by a hat trick from forward Frank Vatrano.

Vatrano netted three goals to give him eight tallies in the first eight games this season for the Ducks. It was his second hat trick already this year.

Anaheim also got goals from Adam Henrique, Ryan Strome, Trevor Zegras and Brett Leason as they improved to 3-0 so far on their current four-game road trip. Goaltender Lukas Dostal made 27 saves to earn the victory.

The Ducks took advantage of several Flyers' turnovers, generating multiple prime scoring opportunities. Vatrano capitalized on a giveaway for his shorthanded third goal that put the game out of reach in the third period.

Travis Konecny scored twice for Philadelphia, while Cam Atkinson and Joel Farabee added a goal each. Backup goalie Samuel Ersson struggled in net, allowing seven goals on just 25 shots faced.

Anaheim's top line of Vatrano, Strome and Mason McTavish combined for four goals in the offensive onslaught. Strome finished with a goal and two assists.

With the 7-4 road win, the Ducks continue their early season success and handed the Flyers their third loss in eight games on home ice.
