Police Increase DUI Patrols for Halloween in Berks County
Law enforcement across Berks County will conduct roving and sobriety checkpoints over Halloween weekend to catch impaired drivers. With celebrations ramping up around Tuesday's holiday, officials are urging people to plan safe transportation if consuming drugs or alcohol.
Police advise that any substance use can impair driving ability, even if obtained legally. Marijuana in particular can slow reaction time and cognitive function. Getting behind the wheel while impaired puts everyone on the road in danger.
Ride sharing or designating a sober driver are recommended. The consequences of a DUI arrest can be severe, potentially costing up to $10,000 in fines and jail time.
By announcing increased patrols and checkpoints in advance, police aim to deter impaired driving and keep Berks roads safer through the Halloween festivities. Their message is simple: If you feel different, you drive different.
Don't take risks by driving impaired.
Two Berks County Men
on Separate Charges
Cruz Lebron-Dejesus, 42, previously residing on Locust Street in Reading, is sought for charges related to corrupt organizations, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, and other related offenses. The Berks County district attorney’s office filed felony charges against him on May 24 for crimes committed between January 1, 2022, and March 2, in Reading. Lebron-Dejesus is described as 6 feet tall and weighing 160 pounds.
Bowin Romano, 44, formerly of Diamond Drive in Tilden Township, is wanted for retail theft. On February 27, Romano was caught on camera at the Walmart in Muhlenberg Township, swapping price tags on items. He was confronted by store employees and a Muhlenberg police officer after attempting to steal goods worth $384. Romano is described as 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 175 pounds.
Authorities urge anyone with information about these fugitives to contact the sheriff’s department’s warrants division at 610-478-6390. The full list of Berks County’s most wanted can be found at countyofberks.com/departments/sheriff/most-wanted.
Eagles Win Despite
Hurts' Knee Injury
Despite a visible knee injury, Jalen Hurts led the Philadelphia Eagles to a 38-31 victory over the Washington Commanders. Hurts, showing resilience, threw for 319 yards and four touchdowns, with A.J. Brown receiving two of them. This win improved the Eagles' record to 7-1, bolstering their Super Bowl aspirations.
Hurts, downplaying his knee issue, focused on the team's journey, while Coach Nick Sirianni praised his toughness and leadership. Hurts' reluctance to run was evident as he only rushed for 7 yards, his lowest since December 2021. Despite a fumble and limited ground game, Hurts excelled in passing, with Brown making history with 125-plus yards in six consecutive games.
The Eagles' defense stepped up in the second half, with key interceptions and sacks. Washington, now 3-5, faced setbacks with Coach Ron Rivera missing a challenge opportunity and receiver Terry McLaurin dropping crucial passes.
Injuries were a concern for both teams, with the Eagles' Jalen Carter, Grant Calcaterra, and Bradley Roby, and the Commanders' Curtis Samuel and Ricky Stromberg, all sustaining injuries.
The Eagles are set to face the Dallas Cowboys next.
Reading Royals Clinch Thrilling 7-6 Victory Over Trois-Rivières
In a nail-biting ECHL North Division game at Santander Arena, the Reading Royals secured a 7-6 win against Trois-Rivières, thanks to a last-minute goal by Fawcett with just 55 seconds left on the clock. The intense match saw eight goals in the third period alone and a total of 71 shots. The game was tightly contested, with neither team leading by more than one goal and 10 different players scoring.
Fawcett was the standout for the Royals with two goals, while Ryan Chyzowski contributed a goal and two assists. On the Trois-Rivières side, Matthew Boucher impressed with a hat trick. Royals' goalie Jacob Kucharski made 35 saves, and Joe Vrbetic of the Lions had 23 saves.
This victory allowed the Royals to split the two-game series, as Trois-Rivières had previously won 4-3 in a shootout during Reading’s home opener. In that game, defenseman Miguel Tourigny scored the decisive goal in the shootout.
