Wyomissing's Title Streakbroken by Trinity in District 3 Class 2A Girls Soccer

Wyomissing's bid for a fourth straight district girls soccer title was halted by Trinity, with freshman Bella Dupes scoring the decisive goal just 35 seconds into overtime during the District 3 Class 2A final at Cumberland Valleyโ€™s Eagle View Middle School. Despite a strong showing where Wyomissing led in possession and shots, they were unable to secure the lead at any point during the match.

The game was tightly contested, with both teams locked at 1-1 after regulation time. Dupes, assisted by Caroline Cunningham, initially put Trinity ahead in the first half. Wyomissing equalized before the break with a header from sophomore Dulce Lytle off a corner kick by Annie McCaffrey.

In overtime, Trinity capitalized on their sole shot with Dupes delivering the winning goal, leaving Wyomissing to reflect on a near miss and to focus on their upcoming first-round game in the PIAA Class 2A playoffs.

Concerns Linger After Blaze at Former Chemical Plant in Reading

Residents in Reading are still uneasy following a large fire at the former Lincoln Chemical building. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stepped in to address the serious situation, as stated by Renata Thakurdyal, the EPA's Community Involvement Coordinator for the region.

Earlier in the week, another fire at the same location prompted the fire marshal to note the presence of flammable materials in the building. Decker believes these should have been removed after being identified. While the specific substances fueling the fire are not yet disclosed, the EPA has acknowledged the presence of drums and totes in the building, which may contain chemicals.

A temporary shelter-in-place order was issued for approximately two hours. The EPA has since assured that there are no ongoing health risks, and residents can safely move around the area. Thakurdyal emphasized that while hazmat suits might be visible as EPA officials enter the building, the air quality outside is safe.

The EPA is conducting air and water quality tests, with plans to release the findings once available. Meanwhile, fire officials have announced that Laurel Street will remain closed between South 7th Street and Spring Garden Street until Monday, and investigations into this fire and the previous one are ongoing. Residents with health concerns are advised to consult their doctors.

Fleetwood High Stages Epic Comeback, Wins in Overtime with
Record-Breaking Performance

Fleetwood

In an extraordinary high school football game, Fleetwood High School staged a remarkable comeback, overcoming a 27-point deficit in the second half to beat Shamokin 42-41 in overtime during the Eastern Conference Class 4A final.

Fleetwood's quarterback Jack Riffle set a school record with 419 passing yards, while senior wide receiver Mason Musitano set single-game records with 15 receptions and 212 receiving yards, adding to his career touchdown record.

Czion Brickle also had a standout performance with 166 rushing yards and three touchdowns, contributing significantly to the team's victory. The game was a rollercoaster, with Shamokin initially leading 34-7 in the third quarter before a series of turnovers allowed Fleetwood to claw back into the game and eventually secure the win with a two-point conversion in overtime. Fleetwood's offense amassed a total of 655 yards in their historic win.

Berks Catholic Secures Championship with Second-Half Surge
Against Hamburg

The Berks Catholic football team concluded their season on a high note, securing the Eastern Conference Class 3A championship with a 40-21 win over Hamburg. The team's victory was marked by a significant turnaround in the second half, where they outperformed Hamburg 23-0. Berks Catholic's offense was powered by three seniors, Michael Bradley, Connor Pennington, and Devin Garcia, each rushing for over 100 yards. Their quarterback, William Hess, also contributed with a touchdown and effective management of the game.

Defensively, a strategic move at halftime proved pivotal. Luke Impellizzeri was shifted to defensive end, which significantly disrupted Hamburg's passing game. The adjustment was effective, as Hamburg's quarterback Tyler Shuey, who had a strong first half, was limited to just 27 yards in the second half.

The game's momentum shifted following a blocked punt by Berks Catholic, leading to a safety, and subsequently, the team took the lead with a touchdown shortly after. Hamburg, dealing with injuries and a young roster, couldn't maintain their early lead and ultimately succumbed to Berks Catholic's persistent offense and revitalized defense.

The win gave Berks Catholic their second consecutive Eastern Conference title, allowing the team and their seniors to celebrate their successful season and close their high school football careers with a cherished championship victory.

Schuylkill Valley Triumphs in Historic District Playoff Win Over Littlestown

Schuylkill Valley

Schuylkill Valley High School's football team continued their remarkable season by securing a historic 45-21 home victory over Littlestown in the District 3 Class 3A quarterfinals. This win marked the first time the Panthers have won a home district playoff game, adding to their achievements this year, which include sharing a league title for the first time.

Dominic Giuffre, a senior running back for Schuylkill Valley, was instrumental in the victory, rushing for 223 yards and three touchdowns in the first half alone. He also contributed defensively with two crucial interceptions that led to scoring opportunities for the Panthers. The team's strong performance was capped off with a 31-21 lead at halftime, which they extended in the second half without allowing any further points from Littlestown.

The Panthers' offense was in full swing, with quarterback Logan Nawrocki throwing for 237 yards and the team amassing a total of 351 rushing yards. The defense also stepped up, making key adjustments at halftime to shut out Littlestown in the second half.

With this win, Schuylkill Valley sets their sights on the semifinals, where they will face top-seeded Wyomissing. The Panthers are determined to maintain their momentum and continue making history in their standout season.

Hershey High Stages Remarkable Comeback to Oust Exeter in
District 5A Playoff Shocker

In a stunning reversal, Hershey High School's football team overcame a 20-point deficit in the final 14 minutes to defeat Exeter High School 28-27 in the first round of the District 3 Class 5A playoffs. Hershey's late-game rally was fueled by three consecutive touchdowns and crucial turnovers forced by their defense, including four in the second half. Hershey's Angel Cabrera was a standout, scoring the final touchdown and securing the victory.

Exeter had established a commanding lead early on, with quarterback Riley Martinez connecting with wide receiver Carter Redding for two touchdowns. However, Hershey's persistence paid off as they chipped away at the lead, with Cabrera ultimately rushing for 174 yards and four touchdowns.

The game's pivotal moment came when Hershey's kicker Cole Goodman, fresh off a soccer victory, made the extra point to take the lead, followed by a game-sealing interception by Anthony Vasquezi.

Exeter's season ended with the loss, despite strong performances from their players, including Jayden Zandier's 222 rushing yards and a touchdown. The defeat was particularly poignant for Exeter's seniors, who had previously led the team to a district title and a league section title.

Pleasant Valley Rallies to Claim
Eastern Conference Class 5A/6A Title Over Gov. Mifflin

In a dramatic reversal of fortunes, Pleasant Valley overcame a 19-point deficit to defeat Gov. Mifflin 28-19 in the Eastern Conference Class 5A/6A championship game.

The Mustangs' early lead, established through a quick touchdown pass and a solid drive, was eroded by penalties and turnovers. Pleasant Valley's comeback was sparked by a late first-half touchdown and dominated the second half with a 99-yard drive and a series of key plays, including a 41-yard quarterback keeper for a touchdown. Gov. Mifflin's attempts to regain control were thwarted by turnovers, with Pleasant Valley capitalizing on interceptions and a pivotal fumble recovery to secure the victory.

The win was marked by standout performances from Pleasant Valley's Alexander Ecker, who notched three touchdowns and 178 yards, and Valentino Byers-Robinson, who contributed significantly to the team's offensive surge. The loss was a tough end to the season for Gov. Mifflin, particularly for the senior players who had shown strong leadership throughout the year.

Reading Royals Stumble in Offensive Effort, Fall to Toledo Walleye

Reading Royals

The Reading Royals' challenging season persisted as they faced a defeat against the Toledo Walleye with a score of 5-2. Despite an initial lead with Ryan Chyzowski's early goal, the Royals were quickly overwhelmed as Toledo responded with four consecutive goals in the first period.

The Royals' offense lagged, only managing 16 shots throughout the game. Alec Butcher did manage to narrow the gap with a second-period goal, assisted by Matt Brown who had a hand in both Royals' goals.

However, Toledo sealed their victory with a final goal in the third period, leaving Reading with a record of 1-3-1-1. The Royals hope to bounce back in their next game against Wheeling.

The Tigers quickly took control of the game, establishing a 2-0 lead within the first eight minutes thanks to goals from Nate Herb and Davin Millisock. Before halftime, Herb assisted William Maurek in netting another goal, solidifying their lead.

Los Angeles Kings Dominate Philadelphia Flyers for a
5-0 Shutout Victory

Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers were blanked by the Los Angeles Kings, with a final score of 5-0, marking their fifth loss in the last seven matchups. Goalie Cam Talbot of the Kings secured the shutout with 24 saves, contributing to the team's six-game point streak. The Kings' offense was ignited by quick goals from Adrian Kempe and Anze Kopitar in the first period, followed by additional goals from Arthur Kaliyev and Trevor Moore in the second, and a final goal by Blake Lizotte in the third.

Philadelphia's Cal Petersen, facing his former team, made 25 saves but couldn't fend off the Kings' aggressive play. The Flyers' defense struggled, particularly highlighted by a turnover from Cam York that led to a goal and resulted in York sitting out the third period.

The Flyers were also impacted by the absence of key players due to injuries, including starting goalie Carter Hart and center Sean Couturier, as well as goalie Felix Sandstrom who was added to the injured list prior to the game. This shutout was the first the Flyers have faced this season.
