Reading Regional Airport Hosts Fifth Annual Camel Trot 5K to Support
Anti-Bullying Initiatives
The Reading Regional Airport is gearing up for the Fifth Annual Camel Trot 5K and Fun Walk on November 12, 2023. This event, which supports The Camel Project's anti-bullying programs, is set to draw participants for a day of health, fitness, and community engagement.
The Camel Trot is not only a fundraiser for The Camel Project's Certified Prevention Specialist program and other training initiatives but also an encouragement for an active lifestyle among attendees of various ages. The day kicks off with registration at 8:45 a.m., followed by the 5K at 10 a.m. and the Fun Walk at 10:15 a.m. Although on-site registration is possible, early online sign-ups are recommended, with a participation fee of $30.
The race route offers a mix of paved airport pathways and surrounding roads, suitable for a broad audience, with Pretzel City Sports handling the timing. Age group winners will be awarded medals.
The event is backed by sponsors including Customers Bank, the Law Office of Robin J. Gray, Rothenberger Insurance Services with Erie Insurance, and Allison Heist from Zuber Realty.
Attendees will have access to refreshments and the chance to see The Camel Project's Camel Caravan, a 40-foot vehicle for community advocacy. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, The Camel Project ensures that event fees and contributions are tax-deductible.
The upcoming Camel Trot 5K and Fun Walk is more than a race; it's an opportunity to unite for a cause that champions safe and supportive environments free from bullying. Participants are invited to join the event at the Reading Regional Airport to support this vital cause.
The GIANT Company Donates 1,500 Turkeys to Food Bank, Pledges 15,000 for Regional Hunger Relief
The GIANT Company is contributing to Thanksgiving celebrations for families in need by donating 1,500 turkeys to Helping Harvest Fresh Food Bank. This gesture is part of a larger initiative to distribute 15,000 turkeys to various food banks and community organizations throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.
The company's initiative is aimed at providing over 125,000 servings of protein to ensure that underprivileged families have the opportunity to enjoy a traditional holiday meal. Beyond the donation, GIANT is also engaging its employees in volunteer work at the food banks, where they will assist with tasks such as packing boxes and stocking shelves in preparation for the holiday demand.
Helping Harvest has acknowledged GIANT's ongoing support, which plays a crucial role in their efforts to address hunger in Berks and Schuylkill counties. In addition to corporate efforts, GIANT is inviting its customers to participate in the fight against hunger by donating turkey certificates or purchasing special reusable bags, with proceeds supporting Feeding America's network of food banks. The campaign for customer participation will run from November 10 to November 23, allowing shoppers to contribute directly at the checkout.
Berks County Man Sentenced to
Prison for Series of Attempted
Armed Robberies in Abington
Rodney Moyer, a 45-year-old man from Berks County, was sentenced to 8 to 16 years in prison after attempting to rob four individuals in Abington Township, claiming he had a gun. The incidents took place on March 7, 2023, and Moyer faced four felony counts of robbery. Montgomery County Judge Thomas M. DelRicci, who passed the sentence, also made Moyer eligible for a drug treatment program during his incarceration.
Moyer, who pleaded guilty earlier in the year, was represented by defense lawyer Andrew J. Levin, who noted Moyer's substance abuse issues and his acceptance of responsibility for his actions. The prosecution, led by Assistant District Attorney Tanner C. Beck, emphasized the terror experienced by the victims, one of whom was holding his young child during the confrontation.
The attempted robberies occurred outside several businesses, including a bank, a craft store, and a gas station. Although no gun was found, the victims were convinced Moyer was armed due to his threats and behavior. Moyer did not make a statement regarding the sentence as he was taken into custody.
The police were alerted to the attempted robberies on the morning of March 7, after victims reported being approached by Moyer, who demanded money while implying he was armed. The encounters varied, with Moyer either directly demanding cash or insinuating violence if his demands were not met. He fled when the victims did not comply. Police apprehended Moyer shortly after these incidents.
Elhadj Mama Foula Diallo Arrested for Simple Assault in Spring Township Domestic Incident
Spring Township Police responded to a call regarding a domestic assault on the 2900 block of Wyoming Drive on October 30, 2023. Upon arrival and subsequent investigation, officers arrested Elhadj Mama Foula Diallo on charges of Simple Assault.
Conrad Weiser Triumphs Over
North Pocono for First
State Soccer Win Since 1999
Conrad Weiser's boys soccer team secured a 3-1 victory against North Pocono in the PIAA Class 3A playoffs' opening round, marking their first state win since 1999. Gavin Rapp and Armaan Malik were pivotal in the win, with each contributing a goal and an assist.
Malik's first-half goal set the Scouts, who are the District 3 runner-up with a 22-4 record, ahead. North Pocono, the District 2 champion with an 18-4 record, managed to equalize in the second half thanks to Elliot Bower. However, Weiser regained the lead with a goal from Julien Moll, followed by Rapp's late goal from Malik's corner kick.
Goalkeeper Gavin Wagner played a key role with six saves, and the Scouts also led in shots and corner kicks. Looking ahead, Conrad Weiser is set to play against Springfield Township, the District 1 runner-up, in the quarterfinals on Saturday, with details on the venue and time to be confirmed. Springfield Township comes off a 4-0 win over Archbishop Ryan.
Tulpehocken Advances to Quarterfinals with 1-0 Win in PIAA Soccer Playoffs
Tulpehocken secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Conemaugh Township in the PIAA Class 1A boys soccer playoff's first round, thanks to a second-half goal by Connor Hussman with an assist from Avery Baransky. The win advances the District 3 runner-up Trojans, who now hold a 21-3 record, to the quarterfinals where they will compete against Charleroi, the District 7 runner-up. Charleroi is coming into the quarterfinals following a 2-1 win over Richland.
Dominating the game, Tulpehocken outperformed Conemaugh Township in both shots and corner kicks. This victory marks the fourth consecutive year that the Trojans have made it to the state playoffs and the fourth consecutive time they have won their opening match. Details for the upcoming quarterfinal match against Charleroi, including the location and time, will be announced later.
Philadelphia Union Defeats New England Revolution to Advance to Conference Semifinals
In a heated playoff series, the Philadelphia Union emerged victorious over the New England Revolution with a 1-0 win, securing a 2-0 aggregate victory in their best-of-3 series. The pivotal moment came just before halftime when New England's Mark-Anthony Kaye received a red card for stepping on Daniel Gazdag. This incident opened up the game for the Union, who capitalized on their numerical advantage with Chris Donovan scoring in the 79th minute.
The Union, who are the fourth seed, will now advance to the conference semifinal against FC Cincinnati, the Supportersโ Shield winner. The decisive match is scheduled to take place at TQL Stadium on either November 25 or 26.
The match was balanced until Kaye's dismissal, with both teams having opportunities. The Union's Nathan Harriel hit the post in the first half, and Quinn Sullivan missed a header in the second. After the red card, the Union made strategic substitutions, bringing on Donovan and Joaquin Torres, which eventually led to the winning goal.
Despite the Revolution controlling a majority of the possession and managing eight shots, the Union's defense, aided by goalkeeper Andre Blake, kept them at bay. The Union had a total of 19 shots throughout the game, reflecting their offensive dominance. This win for the Union comes amidst a series already fraught with tension, including a previous incident involving a Union player's suspension for misconduct.
