Reading Man Arrested for Burglary After Eating Cookies in
Public Works Building

Just a sudden attempt to express the concept of crime.

A man was arrested for breaking into a building owned by the Reading Public Works Department and consuming cookies found in the kitchen. Manuel Pena-Perez, 39, faces charges including burglary, criminal mischief, and criminal trespassing.

The incident occurred late Friday night. A city police officer responded to a burglary alarm at the building on North 11th Street, where an interior motion alarm had been triggered twice. Upon arrival, the officer found two side windows of a second-floor rear door destroyed and encountered Pena-Perez exiting the building.

Pena-Perez, who approached the officer with his hands raised, admitted to breaking the windows to gain entry and eating cookies in the kitchen. The specific use of the building by the department was not mentioned. Following his arrest, Pena-Perez was arraigned in Reading Central Court by District Judge F. Richard Drumheller and placed in Berks County Prison with bail set at $10,000.

Berks County Drug Operation Leads to Multiple Arrests, Two Still Wanted

Jeffrey Kanelos and Moises Franco are still at large

Jeffrey Kanelos and Moises Franco are still at large

Five additional suspects allegedly involved in a Reading-area drug distribution ring have been arrested following the "Operation Knockout" drug raid. This operation, initiated on October 12, targeted individuals linked to a major drug trafficking operation.

The five individuals recently taken into custody are Robert Quinter, Angel Castillo-Cruz, Rahim Shakir Mathies, Ramiro Gonzalez, and Jose Lopez. However, two key suspects, 44-year-old Jeffrey Kanelos and 34-year-old Moises Franco, remain at large.

The investigation gained momentum on September 3, when Pennsylvania State Police made a significant interdiction stop on Interstate 78, leading to the seizure of 9 kilograms of cocaine and a loaded firearm. This discovery was instrumental in uncovering a broader drug trafficking network connected to a Mexican cartel. One of the 29 defendants in the case is reported to have direct links to this cartel and is believed to be a primary supplier for the operation.

Authorities have seized various drugs, including fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, synthetic marijuana, and a significant amount of cash, with the total value estimated to be over $1.5 million. Berks County District Attorney John Adams has been actively involved in this operation.

The Berks County Detectives are seeking information regarding the whereabouts of Kanelos and Franco. The public is encouraged to contact the detectives with any relevant information or to submit anonymous tips through Crime Alert Berks County

Garland and Allen Lead Shorthanded Cavaliers to Overtime Win Over 76ers

The Cleveland Cavaliers, despite being shorthanded, secured a 122-119 overtime victory against the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA In-Season Tournament. Darius Garland led the team with 32 points, while Jarrett Allen contributed 26 points. The Cavaliers, now with an 8-6 record and 2-1 in the tournament, kept their hopes alive for the Eastern Conference's wild-card berth.

Cleveland, playing without key players Donovan Mitchell, Caris LeVert, and Isaac Okoro, showcased a strong team effort with six players scoring in double figures. They dominated in rebounds and points in the paint.

The 76ers, now at a 10-4 record and 2-2 in the tournament, were eliminated from tournament contention with this loss. Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey scored 32 and 30 points, respectively, for Philadelphia.

Cleveland managed to maintain control for most of the game, but the Sixers narrowed the gap, briefly taking a lead late in the game. Key plays in overtime, including an 8-foot hook shot by Allen and crucial free throws by Garland, sealed the victory for the Cavaliers.

Sixers guard Kelly Oubre Jr. is continuing his recovery from a rib injury sustained in an accident and is expected to be reevaluated in a week.

Kutztown University Field Hockey Wins First NCAA National Championship

Kutztown University's field hockey team celebrated a dramatic turnaround, winning the NCAA Division II national championship a year after being unexpectedly excluded from the playoffs. This victory marks the school's first team NCAA national championship, completing a remarkable 19-3 season.

The triumph was particularly sweet for Sarah Gatehouse, a senior team captain and defender, who cited last year's disappointment as a major motivational factor. The team's rallying cry, "KU vs. everyone," encapsulated their determination to prove doubters wrong.

Kutztown's journey to the championship included defeating top-ranked East Stroudsburg in the final at Grappone Stadium in Manchester, N.H. The victory was celebrated with a ceremony on campus, attended by Kutztown athletic director Renee Hellert, KU president Dr. Kenneth Hawkinson, and state Senator Judy Schwenk.

Coach Marci Scheuing, in her 10th season, described the win as an unbelievable and surreal experience. The team displayed resilience in both the semifinal against Shippensburg and the final, coming from behind in both games to secure victory.

Team captain and grad student Breann Craley shared the excitement of the win, highlighting the support from the university community. The emotional journey from last year's heartbreak to this year's triumph was a testament to the team's grit and determination.

Looking ahead, Gatehouse expressed optimism about the team's prospects for the next season, aiming for a repeat of their success.
