City of Reading Steps Up Efforts
to Win State Approval for
Economic Growth Program
Reading's Mayor Eddie Moran announced the formation of a task force to secure the City Revitalization Improvement Zone (CRIZ) program. The CRIZ aims to stimulate economic growth and create jobs. The task force, comprising Debra L. Millman, Peter Rye, and Marisol Torres, will develop the CRIZ application and design its parameters. The program will use state and local taxes to fund development projects, with potential benefits like business incentives, affordable housing, and improved community amenities. The initiative has strong support from state officials and is a key part of Reading's strategy for economic and community development.
Sheetz Launches 'Happy Tanks-giving' Deal with $1.99 Gas
In a festive move to celebrate Thanksgiving, Sheetz, a popular convenience store chain, is offering a special deal on gas prices. The promotion, aptly named "Happy Tanks-giving," features Unleaded 88 gasoline at just $1.99 per gallon. This significant discount is available at Sheetz locations across several states, including Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. The promotion is set to run until Monday, November 27, providing customers with substantial savings during their holiday travels to Thanksgiving destinations. This price cut represents a notable reduction from current gas prices, offering at least a dollar in savings per gallon for motorists.
Tragic Route 183 Collision Claims
Life of Nun, Leaves Two Injured
A fatal collision on Route 183 in Jefferson Township resulted in the death of Sister Georganne N. Molnar, 43. The accident, caused by her vehicle crossing the center line, also injured Federico Perez, 30, and Talita Santos, 28. The road was closed for several hours following the incident, and the death was ruled accidental without plans for an autopsy. Perez and Santos were hospitalized, but their current conditions are unknown.
Berks County Election Officials Assessing Federal Mail-In Ballot Ruling
Berks County election officials are reviewing a new federal court ruling regarding mail-in ballots. The ruling states that ballots received on time but without a handwritten date or with an incorrect date must still be counted. The Berks County Solicitor’s Office is analyzing the ruling, which will be discussed in a special election board meeting on November 27. However, officials still expect to certify the election results on Monday.
Montgomery County Woman
Sentenced for Fatal DUI Crash Killing
Two State Troopers, Pedestrian
In a tragic turn of events, Jayana Webb, a 23-year-old from Eagleville, Montgomery County, has been sentenced to a minimum of 27.5 years in state prison following a DUI crash in 2022 that resulted in the deaths of two Pennsylvania State Troopers and a pedestrian. Court records reveal that Webb pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including third-degree murder and homicide by vehicle while under the influence.
The incident occurred on March 21, 2022, when Webb, driving at a high speed, struck and killed State Troopers Martin Mack and Branden Sisca, along with 28-year-old pedestrian Reyes Oliveras of Allentown. The troopers were in the process of assisting Oliveras, who was walking on I-95 in Philadelphia, to a safer location when the collision happened.
Details regarding the commencement of Webb's sentence have not been disclosed at this time.
⚾️ Zack Wheeler's Future with Phillies in Focus After Aaron Nola Re-Signing
The Philadelphia Phillies are considering extending pitcher Zack Wheeler's contract following their recent successful re-signing of Aaron Nola. Wheeler is entering the final year of his current deal and will become a free agent after the 2024 season. Phillies president Dave Dombrowski has shown interest in keeping Wheeler, but acknowledges the complexity of such negotiations. Wheeler's impressive performance could attract significant offers if he reaches free agency, posing a challenge for the Phillies in maintaining their top-tier rotation.
🏀 Edwards' 31 Points Propel Timberwolves to Victory
Over Embiid-less 76ers
The Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 112-99, led by Anthony Edwards with 31 points and Karl-Anthony Towns with 23 points and 11 rebounds. The win was facilitated by Joel Embiid's absence due to injury. The Timberwolves demonstrated strong defense and capitalized on the 76ers' turnovers and fatigue. Despite efforts from Marcus Morris Sr., Tyrese Maxey, and De’Anthony Melton, the 76ers struggled, marking their fourth loss in six games. The Timberwolves continue their successful streak, having won 10 of their last 11 games.
🏒 Islanders Edge Flyers 3-2, Breaking Home Game Losing Streak
The New York Islanders edged out the Philadelphia Flyers with a 3-2 win, thanks to Brock Nelson's two goals and Anders Lee's scoring. Ilya Sorokin's goalkeeping was key to the Islanders' victory. The game marked Cal Clutterbuck's 1,000th career game and the Islanders' first home win since October. The Flyers' winning streak was halted despite goals from Cam York and Joel Farabee.
