15-Year-Old Faces Murder Charges in Fatal Pottstown Shooting

In a tragic incident in Pottstown, a 15-year-old teenager from Stowe has been apprehended and charged with the murder of a 39-year-old homeless man. The incident occurred on Wednesday, November 22, when the Pottstown Police were called to South Hanover Street at Security Plaza around noon. Upon arrival, they found the victim, Jeremiah Hawkins, with a fatal gunshot wound to his head.

Thomas James Niarhos, the accused, was held at the scene by witnesses until the police arrived. A .40 caliber Smith & Wesson firearm, belonging to Niarhos' father, was found at the scene. Investigations revealed that Niarhos had an altercation with Hawkins, during which Hawkins tried to defend himself with a tire. Niarhos, however, fired the gun, striking Hawkins in the face.

An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the head, and the manner of death was ruled as homicide. Niarhos faces several charges including first-degree murder and is being tried as an adult. He is currently held at the Montgomery County Youth Center without bail, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for November 30.
